He completed his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he received the Abram Cohen Award in Periodontics. After graduating at the top of his class, he completed his residency at NYU Lutheran Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center in Brooklyn, NY, where he worked closely alongside oral-maxillofacial surgeons and many dental specialists on cases involving head and neck trauma, facial plastic surgery, anesthesia and sedation, dental implants, and TMJ.

He then served a second year as Chief Resident in the Department of Dental Medicine. Following residency, he lived and worked in Manhattan for five years before moving to Seattle.

Dr. Hwang has earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, where dentists must take more than 500 hours of continuing education courses in various disciplines and pass a rigorous six hour exam. This distinction is achieved by less than 5% of dentists in the United States and Canada.
